National Security Air and Space

With a proven record of delivering space qualified technology, AOS develops and produces active and passive electro-optical sensors and advanced FPGA based image processing technologies that can help address urgent national security space issues. Our core capabilities allow improved Space Situational Awareness (SSA) through:

  • Autonomous execution of cooperative and non-cooperative
    • proximity operations
    • formation flying, and
    • target capture
  • Detection, classification, and identification of ground or space based targets
  • Modularity to satisfy multiple missions.

Orbital Express

AOS built and tested the active docking system EDU for DARPA’s Orbital Express ASTRO module, and supported Boeing and Orbital Sciences in the integration of the flight system. Our ULTOR® Active AR&D sensor technology has advanced significantly since Orbital Express, but is still based on the same key technology that was so successful on this mission.

Optical Targets

In addition to our work on the AR&D sensor for ASTRO, AOS also provided the optical targets for the Orbital Express NexSat module. We delivered the same space qualified retro-reflectors for installation on the back end of the Hubble Space Telescope during the upcoming Servicing Mission 4.

DART

In 2002, AOS was selected by NASA to develop the first prototypes of the Advanced Video Guidance Sensor (AVGS) and to support Orbital Sciences Corporation (OSC) in developing the flight hardware for the Demonstration of Autonomous Rendezvous Technology (DART) mission. The 2005 flight of this sensor system was our first experience fielding space qualified hardware. Our AVGS sensor was a complete success and was selected as the sensor for Orbital Express.
